Budokan Judo's annual tournament gathered over 170 competitors from 26 dojos last Saturday at Shorewood High School. This year marks the 40th anniversary of opening the local judo dojo following Kodokan style from Japan. This year had more youth competitors than previously, which was appreciated by tournament guest Neil Simon, the president of the national judo federation.
"This tournament shows the grassroots of the judo developments having beginners through yudansha (black belt holders)," he said of the judo of this region. "[This area] still has a very good and solid program."
Fox 13 news anchor Lara Yamada participated in the tournament to present the trophy to winners. During lunchtime, the Northwest Taiko performed for hundreds of the tournament visitors. The judo organization plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary this fall.
