Kenji Johjima stays another three years in Seattle
By The North American Post Staff

Seattle Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima agreed to a three-year-extension of his contract until 2011 last Friday. The contract is for $24 million, according to several reports.

The 31-year-old Japanese player showed his ability as one of the top catchers in the big leagues in both offense and defense. Since 2006, his first season in the big leagues, he caught 2,444.1 innings as of last Friday, which was the third most in MLB.

He won a Gold Glove seven times as well as league best catcher six times in Japan. He led the Fukuoka Soft Bank Hawks to the league championship three times, in 1999, 2000 and 2003. He also marked his 1,500th career hit on Apr. 15.

The contract extension means the Mariners will keep two Japanese players for the next several years in key positions. Ichiro signed a five-year-$90-million contract through 2012 last year.
