100 Umbrellas in Seattle

Colorful umbrellas' art bloomed out in Seattle.

Under a clear blue sky on Sunday, Sept. 7, umbrellas blossomed like flowers in Seattle.

From the Seattle Center to the Water Front Park, 20 volunteers walked with umbrellas with flower designs on them.

These umbrellas were made by two artists from Japan who use the name MireyHiroki. Their trademark logo is "a flower," and flowers are a theme in all their art.

They draw their pieces of work with crayons and draw from the heart in order to send their message of love and peace.

In the past three years, they have had two projects to tell people about the problem of consuming disposable vinyl umbrellas in Japan.

MireyHiroki, two artists started this event in 2005.

This idea of the work is their message to let people know about environmental issues concerning the over-consumption of vinyl umbrellas in Japan. Japan has the highest consumption of umbrellas in the world.

The event on Sept. 7 was the first attempt to show their art in the states.

They had the "100 umbrellas" in Omotesandou in Tokyo and in Kyoto; these events were successful in spreading their message and their art in two major cities in Japan.

This time that project was combined with a Seattle women's trade show. The trade show was also a first for entrepreneurial women seeking access to international markets. Also this 1st Annual Entrepreneurial Women's International Trade show invited some artists such as a painter and a traditional Japanese dancer including the umbrella art from Japan.

A coordinator of this project, Naohiro Sonoda, said he was pleased to manage this project. He said he wanted to get involved in helping environmental issues, and even though it is a small action, it is something to give people a chance to start to know and think about the issues concerning this project.

In their message for 100 Umbrellas in Seattle, they hope that their art will gather worldwide artists to New York and announce environmental issues and plans to make steps to solve them with art.
